Gender-based violence in Timor Leste

Gender-based violence is widespread in Timor Leste, yet perpetrators are rarely punished. Family disputes and domestic violence is often considered a "normal" yet very private occurrence within the family.

Farewell to Timor

This blog entry will be my last, unfortunately. My time in Timor Leste has come to a close. Things ended a bit abruptly earlier this month when I was medivaced from Dili to Singapore with hemorrhagic dengue.

Remembering the Santa Cruz massacre

Candles burned and blazing tires spewed acrid smoke into the humid night air across Dili. Crowds of people milled around the ramshackle neighborhoods of the Timorese capital and remembered the dead on a recent evening.

Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta visited Concern projects in Daudere village, in early November, citing disaster mitigation efforts vital to community's future.
