A legacy in Rwanda
Leaving a legacy donation can have a profound impact on people’s lives. It can provide education to those who really need it, as in the case with a community in Gakenke District, Rwanda.
In 2006, a Concern supporter left a legacy €99,358.78 to Concern’s charity work in Rwanda. This legacy was used in the livelihood project that Concern runs in the Gakenke District in Rwanda. This project gives poor farmers a better chance to make a living while taking special care of vulnerable households, helping them to increase food production and household income.
Education is beyond reach
Going to secondary school is only a dream for many children in Rwanda. Children, especially girls, from poor households often miss out on the opportunity. Fees, uniforms and school books are expensive and beyond the reach of most families.
Secondary schooling
This legacy helped Concern to restore hope for many local children who were unable to attend secondary school.
Concern helped improve household income through activities such as horticulture, small animal rearing, small-scale trading and handicrafts. By helping people make the most of their income, families had enough to eat and money to spend on education.
Raising standards
More than 26 children have been supported through this scheme every year, with girls given priority in order to increase their chance of going to secondary school. Some of the children have shown exemplary achievement in the national examinations.
The father of one child explained, “My child is now in Senegal pursuing third level education through a government scholarship. I give thanks to Concern, which supported my child through his secondary education. Without this support, my son could have run away to the city or remained jobless and hopeless or died in the village in poverty.”
