Providing safe water in eastern Chad
The overflow of the Darfur conflict into neighbouring Chad resulted in large numbers of refugees from Sudan and Chadians displaced from their villages. This left thousands congregating in camps in the border region, around towns such as Goz Beida.
Improved security
In the past year relations between the governments of Sudan and Chad have improved. A joint border force was deployed to improve security along their mutual border.
Moving home
As a result there has been a reduction of rebel activity in the region and many people want to return to their homes. They can then cultivate their land and provide for themselves and their families.
However it has been three years since they were forced to abandon their homes. Now, their villages are lacking in basic services such as access to clean water, health clinics, schools and sanitation facilities.
Water in Africa
In October 2009 Concern’s emergency response team engineer led an assessment of water and sanitation situation in the villages around Goz Beida. 27 villages were visited and the assessments recommended that 19 of these be prioritised for water and sanitation interventions.
Contaminated water
The key finding was that the majority of villages were obtaining water from open shallow wells. These are dug in dried-out riverbeds or swampy areas and provide very little water. Domestic animals also drank directly from the wells, contaminating the water.
Budget
The budget of this project is €50,188.
What your support will do
This project will fund the following:
- Geographic surveys to ascertain suitable locations for 14 boreholes
- Drilling one of these boreholes and installing a foot pump
- Water quality testing
- Well structures for all 14 boreholes
- The salary of a Chadian construction supervisor to oversee the project
Outcome
When the project is complete, more than 7,000 people will have access to clean, safe water. The drilling of boreholes and foot pump installation means the well will be sealed from contamination.
