International Women’s Day 2010
Every year on 8 March people celebrate International Women's Day. This year Concern Worldwide has a number of events to mark the day while highlighting the plight of some of the women we work with.
One billion people go to bed hungry every night. The majority of these people are women, despite the fact that they produce the majority of food in developing countries. World’s hungry
Women are largely responsible for growing, buying, selling and cooking food, as well as feeding their children and families, yet women make up 60% of the world’s hungry. Because when times are hard, they eat last and least.
We believe that poverty and inequality are so closely linked that one cannot be tackled without addressing the other.
Events in UK
In London, Concern, ActionAid, and the APPG on Agriculture and Food for Development are having a reception in the Cholmondeley Room, House of Lords. This event will aim to highlight the important role women play in the fight against hunger, asking people to take a pledge to support the fight against hunger. Read more.
Events in Ireland
Women of Concern are running a photography exhibition in Dublin, featuring photos from three of Ireland’s top photographers. These images (see them below) tell powerful stories of hope, determination and survival from Bangladesh, Ethiopia and post-earthquake Haiti.
In Cork a selection of these photos will also be exhibited during a lunchtime concert in Cork’s City Hall. Read more.
Prints for sale
At both of these events, it is possible to purchase prints of the images being exhibited. In the photo gallery below, you can have a look at the images available for sale. If you’re interested in buying any of these prints, contact gail.williams@concern.net.
