Death toll rises in Myanmar

Update: up to 22,000 people are said to have died in Myanmar (formerly Burma) following a cyclone. That number is set to rise and many more are missing, according to reports.

Concern does not currently work in Myanmar, but we are looking into setting up a response.

Concern will be working closely with Alliance 2015 partners Cesvi and Welthungerhilfe who are already on the ground in Myanmar. They are conducting assessments, and we are awaiting their results.

We’ll be receiving updates from Concern’s team in the area over the coming hours and days. More to come soon…

it looks like 15,000 might be a hopeful estimate. some of the news stations are saying it could double

Just saw on CNN that it is more like 22,000. i hope the junta there allow aid agencies in to help the people.

This is Tajkir from Bangladesh. As a Bangladeshi, we are familiar with flood, cyclone like natural disaster. In present context it is a burning issue, because of regular visit of this disaster. We polluted our environment frequently. And I think it is a man made problems. I am an environmentalist and hope all of you concern about our environment. Keep it cool and please don

I've just finished studying the plight of Burma for my OU course and it amazes me how few had heard of it or its plight. My concern is that aid will be insufficient because Burma is just not "cool" enough. I hope some of the stars who want to help third world and neglected countries will dig deep and help these poor but dignified and beautiful people. Like many asian countries that suffer at the hands of extreme and unexpected weather conditions, they were in need before from the regime of the military junta and this was the last thing they would be able to cope with.
