HIV awareness in India
India is home to one in seven HIV cases worldwide. This year, we’ve been commemorating World AIDS Day in India by raising awareness of the issues around AIDS and HIV and promoting human rights.
Mobile exhibition
Concern has been hosting a mobile HIV awareness exhibition across India since Monday 22 November. The mobile van is travelling along the Orissa coastline and will cover a total of 36 sites in six districts by Friday 3 December.
Reaching out
We’ve been working with our local partner organisations to make this exhibition a success. The aim is to reach out to rural people. We want to raise awareness of HIV while also addressing the stigma and discrimination associated with it. We’re also looking to clarify the myths and misconceptions around HIV transmission.
Teaching
The mobile exhibition is also being used as a learning centre. We’ve been educating people through interactive theatre shows, films and games. Over the coming week, the exhibition van will cover the following districts: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda and Ganjam district, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack City. The two-week initiative will encompass World AIDS Day, which takes place on 1 December.
Just be friends
As well as this, we’ve been running a campaign with our local partners through television and radio channels. The campaign is called “Why think? Just be friends.” It aims to reduce stigma and discrimination of HIV and AIDS and to promote human rights. Concern’s country director in India, Dipankar Datta, explained:

Yes Hiv awareness should be in india also. This disease is dreadful and i wish no one found this disease in them self. Everyone should keep in mind that if they have caught by this disease. They are finished so we must know about the safety and know about Hiv. Your blog has nice information. Thanks
