Congratulations Dominic OBE

Last Friday, in Buckingham Palace, Dominic MacSorley was invested with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Princess Anne, “for services to International Humanitarian Aid.”

Dominic has worked with Concern since 1982. His record of service is a roll call of the humanitarian disasters where Concern has been present over the past 28 years: Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Rwanda, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Darfur, Democratic Republic of the Congo and, most recently, Haiti.

Leadership and laughter

Dominic brings a deep compassion, serious professionalism, great team building and leadership skills, and a sense of fun to everywhere he has worked. He has always been a great mentor and guide to younger colleagues. Generating fun and laughter is integral to how he works, how he enhances morale within a team and how he can get the best out of people – even if they are working in the most terrible of circumstances.

Corridors of power

Since 2002, he has served as Director of Operations for Concern US. He has represented Concern and Interaction, the representative body for US NGOs, at the UN. Dominic has brought his vast experience to that representation and has shown he can be as adept in the corridors of power as he is in managing a response to a humanitarian disaster on the ground.

Proud day

Dominic’s investiture with his OBE last Friday was a fitting tribute to a career of service to the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world. It was a proud day for him and his family. His remarkable mother Peggy and sister Mary were present in Buckingham Palace. I was also present and delighted, on behalf of Concern and on my own behalf, to be there. It can surely only be a matter of time before he is back in the palace again, being tapped on each shoulder with a sword by the serving monarch, and instructed “Arise, Sir Dominic.”
