The African Smallholder Farmers’ Group (ASFG), of which Concern Worldwide is a member, launched a new report in the UK Parliament on 7 July. The report is named “Africa's Smallholder Farmers: Approaches that work for viable livelihoods.”

Meeting needs

Dr Darren Evans Concern’s head of policy and campaigns spoke at the launch:

With the flurry of international political and institutional activity
around the food crises of 2008 it is so easy to forget the people at
the frontline - smallholder farmers, often women-headed households.
This report shows us that with the right support, smallholder farmers
have the potential to be highly productive, which can help solve the
food and economic needs of their families and their local community.

Working with farmers

The report highlights how smallholder farmers have to struggle just to grow enough to feed themselves and their families. It also discusses the best ways approaches that work on the ground to support these farmers. Concern's
facilitation of rural women's groups in Liberia and Sierra Leone are highlighted as case studies.
