Drought crisis and Unheard Voices
The Unheard Voices campaign is about ensuring poor farmers are able to grow enough food to feed their families. The devastating drought that has struck east Africa is a testament to how important this goal is.
Concern Worldwide’s emergency teams are responding to the crisis in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia. This work is vital, but a longer term strategy, providing support to poor farmers, is also needed.
Long-term prevention
Most people living in poverty in these countries are reliant on agriculture and the rain that keeps everything alive. With rainfall becoming increasingly erratic, it’s important that poor farmers are able to irrigate their land and adapt to changes.
New farming methods
We’re trying to ensure they can do this by teaching them new farming methods. For instance, conservation agriculture, a method practiced in Concern programmes, drastically reduces the amount of water needed for farming. If adopted widely, techniques such as this could help prevent drought-related crises in the future.
Unheard Voices
The Unheard Voices campaign is calling for donors like the UK government to help poor farmers grow enough food to feed themselves, their families and communities.
In the light of the recent drought emergency, campaigning for longer term agricultural support has never been more relevant.
