A call to action

Long-term supporter of Concern Worldwide and sponsor of the “Woman Can’t Wait” event, Jack McConnell MSP said:

Across the world it is women who are largely responsible for growing as well as preparing food, yet their contribution is often forgotten. In September, politicians will gather in New York to review the UN Millennium Development Goals. It is a matter of regret that the world’s commitment to halve the number in extreme poverty is still far more being realised. We must redouble our efforts to support women farmers, their families and their communities in the developing world. Their future is our future too.

Support from parliament

The launch saw many members of the Scottish Parliament keen to show their support, posing for pictures with our pledge card. Minister for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop MSP, was just one of these and Jack McConnell MSP and Willie Bain MP have all posted support of the campaign on their websites.

Parliamentary motion

To date, 38 MSPs have supported a motion in Scottish Parliament on the day of the launch, urging the UN and world leaders to take action to support women marginal farmers.
