On 9 July 2011, South Sudan celebrated its independence from the Republic of Sudan. Concern Worldwide continues to provide aid and relief in both countries.

In the Republic of Sudan, we work in the western Darfur region and along the border with South Sudan in South Kordofan. We first started working in Sudan in 1985 in response to refugees entering the country from Ethiopia.

Darfur

Concern has been working in Darfur since 2004, responding to the needs of those affected by the Darfur conflict. Our programmes serve refugees displaced from neighbouring Chad, internally displaced people who have fled from their villages to find refuge in larger towns or camps, and also those affected by conflict in their own villages.

Kordofan

We first started working in Kordofan in 1985, now our work is focused around Muglad in the west of the state and in the Nuba Mountains region. Here we work mainly through partner charities building their capacity to engage in development activities which focus largely on helping people earn a living and ensuring clean water and good hygiene practices are available. We are working to improve access to clean water in the Muglad area, which is mainly desert and where the water is extremely far down below the surface.

Meeting basic needs

An important part of our work in the Republic of Sudan is our water, sanitation and hygiene programme. Through this we provide access to clean, safe water as well as access to latrines. We also work with communities to improve hygiene and health practices.

Attacking malnutrition

One of our main areas of work in the Republic of Sudan is our nutrition programme. We use an approach called Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) to treat moderately and severely malnourished children under five. This approach is a ground-breaking way to tackle malnutrition, especially in children under five. In addition to using this approach for malnourished children, we also use it to treat malnourished pregnant or lactating women and the elderly.

Enhancing lives

We also support people’s livelihoods with charity projects that specifically target the key aspects of helping people to earn a living, namely ensuring they can access food and earn an income.

Nuba Mountains

In the Nuba Mountains, Concern has been working with both partners and local communities to help manage natural resources.  We’re focusing on preventing soil erosion and reversing environmental degradation to ensure more effective use of water. In other words, this new approach makes sure that the water that falls during the once-yearly heavy rains is absorbed over a wider area. This water can be used for a longer period of time by the community to grow crops and as a general water source.
