Rwanda is among the poorest countries in the world. It ranks 152 out of 169 countries in terms of the Human Development Index. Concern Worldwide first began working in Rwanda in 1994, providing aid and relief. In Rwanda, we work in four charity programme sectors: livelihoods, HIV and AIDS, health and primary education which are implemented in Gakenke, Huye, Nyaruguru and Gisagara.

Health and nutrition

The aim of our five-year health programme in Rwanda is to reduce child mortality by reaching almost 300,000 children under five years of age. Targeting 1.7 million people, the programme is treating children under five to reduce deaths due to malaria, diarrhoea, and pneumonia. We’re now focusing on delivering health information relating to the use of mosquito nets and hand-washing stations.

Reducing malnutrition

We’re also focusing on treating and preventing child malnutrition. This programme will build on early steps to address long-term poverty issues that contribute to malnutrition.

Improving agriculture

2010 saw the final year of our livelihoods programme which focused on agricultural production and support with income-generating activities to promote employment. We focused on improving food production by training people about better farming methods and techniques.

Social protection

In 2010, we launched a social protection programme for poor households. We’re providing support in the form of cash transfers, to meet their basic needs and generate productive assets. This has increased their resilience to food shortages and other crises. In 2011, the programme will target 400 families through cash transfers.

Primary education

Since 2004, we have been working to improve access to and quality of education in schools in three districts: Huye, Gakenke and Nyaruguru. We have done this by supporting community involvement through parent and teacher committees. The programme aims to reduce the drop-out rate among boys and girls and promote positive changes in attitude and practices, especially those of parents and community members with regard to their involvement in primary education

The main focus for 2011 will be on supporting children and further developing the capacity of parent and teacher committees to coordinate assistance to orphans and vulnerable children in and out of school.
