Mayor of London's letter of support for Nature's Fury
Saturday, 15 April 2006
Concern Worldwide commissioned Shahidul Alam to travel to Pakistan to visit two of the provinces that suffered the greatest destruction and loss of life, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and North West Frontier Province. Shahidul’s pictures reveal the devastation caused by the earthquake, and the resilience and determination of the people affected as they begin to rebuild their lives. The exhibition is personally supported by Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London.
Dear Concern Worldwide,
Thank you for your email of 12th April regarding Concern Worldwide's tour of Shahidul Alam's photography exhibition.
I am pleased that Concern Worldwide has taken this initiative to highlight the devastation caused by the South Asian earthquake of October 2005 and that Londoners will be given an opportunity to learn about the earthquake through the eyes of the eminent photographer, Shahidul Alam.
The enormous loss of life and scale of devastation are a human tragedy that continues to touch many Londoners directly. Londoners, especially in the Pakistani and Kashmiri communities, responded very generously after the earthquake.
It is imperative that both the international community continue to provide the resources for the rehabilitation and long-term reconstruction of the region so that lives can be rebuilt and people can live in safety and dignity. I also urge Londoners to continue to give generously. I will continue to do all I can as Mayor to encourage and support Londoners in these activities.
I wish the exhibition tour every success.
Yours sincerely,
