Unheard Voices at the Edinburgh Mela
Tuesday, 4 September 2007
Concern contributed to the Edinburgh Mela again this year, highlighting the plight of poor farmers in developing countries.
This year’s Mela took place on 1 and 2 September and brought a wealth of diverse cultural and musical acts to the city. The Mela still boasts the title of the biggest multicultural festival in Scotland and year after year provides a unique opportunity for people around the world to come together.
Small scale farmers
Concern’s contribution to the event was an exhibition called “Unheard Voices”. It highlighted issues affecting small-scale farmers in the developing world, the majority of whom live in abject poverty. Concern works with many poor farmers, supporting them with practical help on the ground; the exhibition told the stories of some of these individuals.
Now through their activities around the “Unheard Voices” project, Concern wants to call attention to how the UK government could play a bigger part in reducing poverty amongst small scale farmers, through improved policies and better quality of aid.
