Concern launches new book at the Scottish Parliament
Wednesday, 3 October 2007
Concern Worldwide will launch a book entitled "Poverty, AIDS and Hunger: Breaking the Poverty Trap in Malawi" at the Scottish Parliament on 25 October.
The book highlights a range of complex issues affecting communities across Malawi. It also maintains that international organisations working in the country could do more to serve its needs.
Speaking about the book, Malcolm Blackie and Anne Conroy, two of the book’s five authors, said: “It describes Malawi’s plight as a storm that brings together climatic disaster, impoverishment, the AIDS pandemic, the long-standing burden of malaria and other communicable diseases…Yet the situation is far from hopeless. The problems that Africa faces, demonstrated in sharp relief in Malawi are difficult but solvable with practical and proven technologies…We propose fresh, clear, and radical thinking on new avenues and interventions.”
Malcolm Blackie and Anne Conroy will be speaking at the launch. The other authors include Justin Malewezi, Jeffrey Sachs and Alan Whiteside.
Poverty, AIDS and Hunger: Breaking the Poverty Trap in Malawi was previously launched in England. Click here for more information.
