Concern's response to floods in Haiti
This September, Tropical Storm Jeanne hit Haiti, killing up to 2,500 people and displacing thousands more. Due to a lack of an early warning system, added to the aftermath of the political unrest earlier in the year, people were unaware and unprepared.
As part of its ongoing response to the September flooding in Gonaives, Concern worked with the NGO, CARITAS to coordinate distributions. They distributed hygiene and household kits as well as clothing to approximately 400 families who are staying at various shelters throughout the city, mainly in schools and churches. Distribution was slow and difficult due to the volatile security situation.
Concern will also be supporting various rehabilitation projects, throughout the city. The drinkable water system in Poste Metier/Baie des Moustiques, which was damaged by the floodwaters will be upgraded and reinforced to help protect it from any possible future disaster. Concern will be working with a local Haitian NGO partner, ODRINO, on this project.
Concern will support the rehabilitation of two irrigation systems in La Rivière and Soucé, Ennery and the reparation of a damaged road, also in Ennery. Concern’s Alliance 2015 partner, German Agro Action who are active in the region, will be implementing the project with input and funding from Concern.
In collaboration with an existing micro finance partner FONKOZE, Concern will be supporting a programme to subsidise 2,000 small businesses that were severely affected by the flooding.
