The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were agreed at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000 and nearly 190 countries have subsequently signed up to them.

They were introduced as part of a broader attempt to encourage the international community to join forces, with a commitment, to making a difference in the developing world.

The 2005 World Summit will be the largest gathering of world leaders in history. This week on September 14-16, more than 180 Heads of State will meet at the United Nations to forge an action plan for promoting international security and for achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

The Eight Millennium Development Goals are:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

Concern have collaborated with the Guardian in a supplement published on the 3rd September about these goals. Click here to see view pages of the supplement.
