- CTC Learning Forum Report - Quality Training for Health Workers
The sixth CTC Learning Forum was held in Lilongwe district in February, 2008, and focused on efforts being made to improve the quality and effectiveness of training for CTC in Malawi. Training is a major investment in starting and maintaining a CTC program. At the moment, all training for CTC is done as in service training, although some doctors, nurses, and clinicians in Malawi receive pre-service training on inpatient management of acute malnutrition through Nutrition Rehabilitation Units. As the Malawi government increasingly takes on responsibility for the management of CTC through the health system, it is even more important that effective, standardized training and tools are available for districts to conduct their own CTC trainings. - An innovative response to food crises
A new report has been produced that looks at Concern's Emergency Cash Transfer project in Malawi. This programme provides cash as an alternative to food aid. Concern Malawi designed and implemented the Dowa Emergency Cash Transfers project in response to a localised food and livelihoods crisis in Dowa District in central Malawi. Rather than giving food aid, Concern provided cash payments which varied according to household size and were also linked to the price of maize. This ensured that families' ability to buy food was maintained even when prices rose. Giving cash rather then food empowers benificiarys to make choices on how to manage their lives and livelihoods. Concern also found that injecting cash at the grassroots level can generate a significant multiplier effect that benefits the whole community and the local economy. (11 Jan 2008)
