Drought affecting food prices in Kenya - video

Ever-increasing food prices are having a devastating impact on Kenya’s most vulnerable people.

Sustained droughts are one of the main causes of rocketing food prices in Kenya. Areas where Concern is working, in the Kerio Valley in the west and in Marsabit and Kalacha in the far north-east, have been particularly badly affected.

Less than one meal a day

This short film features people who have seen the price of staples such as maize, beans and oil soar in the last two years. Many families are now getting by on only one meal a day. In the film, one woman says that she often misses her meals altogether so she can feed her children.

Concern is already responding to this crisis. In the Kerio Valley, we have successfully piloted a programme that uses mobile phone technology to give cash to the most vulnerable families so they can buy food. Marsabit and Kalacha we are working with partner agency Community Initiatives Facilitation and Assistance (Cifa) to help people manage the effects of drought.

We need to do more. There are many thousands of people in Kenya and the neighbouring countries of Ethiopia and Somalia who need immediate help.
