Food Direct
Imagine parents walking for miles in baking heat while their children suffer from lack of food and severe diarrhoea. Even when they reach their destination, there’s no guarantee they will receive the proper care they urgently need.
It’s the harsh reality facing millions of people in developing countries around the world, but the picture is slowly changing for the better. Concern has developed an innovative way of distributing food, knowledge and skills to those who need it most.
Innovative solution
Food Direct tackles food shortages and their effects at the source. Most aid distribution involves parents and children travelling gruelling distances to feeding centres. By contrast, with this approach Concern operates within communities.
By establishing local clinics, outreach workers and locally trained volunteers, a severely malnourished child is no longer required to make a life-threatening journey for treatment. Instead children are nursed back to health in their own homes, by their mother or carer.
Helping thousands of children
In 2006, Concern helped treat almost 30,000 malnourished children in eight countries across Africa, including Ethiopia, Niger and Malawi. But there are over a million more children in these countries who are malnourished and need support now.
What you can do
It is with the help of regular donations that Concern can most effectively expand this life-saving work in the world’s poorest countries. Please help by setting up a Direct Debit today.
