Nepal real guide: food and drink

Concern is working to improve access to vital resources, such as water and food, in rural areas of Nepal.

With huge rivers flowing from the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, Nepal is second only to Brazil in terms of water resources. However, over one third of the population does not have access to fresh water or toilets. Another third access their water through open sources such as rivers.

A staggering 80% of all diseases are contracted because of poor sanitation and unsafe water. Over 30,000 people in Nepal die every year from diarrhoea.

Food

Only about 40% of rural households produce enough food to meet their needs year-round. The effects of climate change, combined with poor farming techniques, means farmers cannot feed their families and are forced to travel for work, leaving women and children to do strenuous farm labour.

What Concern is doing

Concern is constructing new water tap stands and building latrines to help prevent water-borne diseases. Concern is also implementing irrigation systems and training farmers to use techniques that will improve food production.
