Since January 2002, Concern has run a water and environmental health programme in refugee camps in Kagera's Ngara district. In 2004, as part of this programme, Concern set up a nursery of mosquito-repellent plants in one of the camps. The seedlings are planted around people's houses, reducing the incidence of mosquito bites and thus malaria.
There has been a definite reduction in the number of malaria cases in households that have planted the repellents. Natalia Hakizimana (47) and her family of nine live in the camp: "I planted Mexican marigold, lemongrass and nabahengere [a species of basil] around my house because they repel mosquitoes. We used to frequently suffer from malaria, but last year no one from my family suffered. I strongly believe that these plants repel mosquitoes."
Please help us to develop this research and expand the programme to a wider community by donating now.
€45 could pay for enough lemongrass seeds for half a plant nursery.
€365 could pay for enough Mexican marigold seeds for a whole nursery.
