Hundreds of people have already joined Concern’s Unheard Voices campaign urging the UK government to listen to the millions of poor farmers around the world.
Although the UK government already provides aid to developing countries, spending on agriculture has more than halved in the past 10 years. As a result of the campaign, the Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, has promised to consult widely when he reviews his department’s agriculture policy in a few months. The pressure needs to be kept up during 2008 to ensure he keeps this promise, and prioritises the needs of poor farmers.
