Overview
Malawi is surrounded by Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. Lake Malawi is almost one quarter the size of the country. According to the UNDP Human Development report, Malawi rate among the 40 poorest countries in the world. Out of every 1,000 children born, 114 die at birth, 14.2 per cent of people between 15 and 49 are infected with HIV&AIDS and there is a chronic problem with malnutrition.
Concern's work in Malawi
In 2002 there was a severe food shortage in Malawi and Concern responded. During that time Concern distributed food to more than 10,000 families. Concern work is focused in the central region of the country, in Dowa, Nkhotakota and Lilongwe districts.
After the food crisis Concern continued with a food security programme, Community based Therapeutic Care (CTC) and Emergency preparedness plan.
The food security programmes focus on improving farming techniques and ensuring that quality crops and healthy livestock are available to small scale farmers. Along with supporting people in food production, Concern is helping farmers grow drought-resistant crops. Read more...
