Overview

Concern's work in Uganda

Concern works in five districts of the country and has been in Uganda since 1990.

In the capital, Kampala, it is helping approximately 270,000 people. It is building up structures whereby people will be in a position to manage their own affairs in a more meaningful and efficient way.

Concern is working with local government agencies and community groups to enhance their systems and levels of efficiency in improving the living standards of the people it is serving.

In the north of the country in Soroti and Katakwi there are over 181,000 internally displaced people living in camps and Concern has been involved in emergency work to improve water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in the camps.

It is policy to pull out of this work this year and spend more resources helping people to settle back in their homes in the Katakwi region.

Also in Katakwi Concern is working to establish a more efficient type of local government, which will be of greater benefit to the poorest people. It is a question of empowering people to begin taking charge of their own affairs.

In Nakasongola District, which is in central Uganda, Concern is helping local development groups to respect, protect and promote the rights of poor communities to take part in the affairs of government.

Nakasongola District is the poorest district in central Uganda.

HIV&AIDS

According to the latest figures available, over four per cent of the population are infected with HIV&AIDS. 84,000 people have lost their lives through the HIV&AIDS pandemic.

In all its projects in Uganda, Concern makes a concentrated effort in highlighting the dangers of the HIV&AIDS virus. The goal is to help reduce the socio-economic effects of HIV&AIDS on the most vulnerable members of the community.

In doing this, Concern is working in co-operation with its partner groups in educational programmes so as to mitigate the impact of HIV&AIDS.
