Overview
Concern's work in Rwanda
Education
Concern introduced the Primary Education Support Programme - PESP.
This programme is based on the principle that parent involvement in the running of schools are central to the quality of education their children receive.
Apart from getting more children in school and improving the quality of education, Concern’s PESP programme aims to benefit the children of the poorest families.
Various activities and initiatives are regularly organised to explain the importance and benefits of getting teachers and parents to work together so that the children of Rwanda get the quality education they need.
And last month Concern facilitated a three day workshop in which, community members discussed ways of getting the whole community to contribute to improving the quality of schools management.
The 49 participants resolved to share the lessons learnt with the wider community in their respective catchment areas.
Parent Teacher Committees from various schools also visited several homes to find out why children from those households were not attending school.
Health
It was also back to class for Traditional Birth Attendants. 106 Traditional Birth Attendants underwent three days of training, with a strong focus on emergency labour.
And as part of its malaria control programme, CONCERN along with other groups distributed 920 insecticide treated bed nets primarily for distribution to pregnant women, and 2576 insecticide tablets to 7 health centres. Refresher courses were also completed for 344 distributors who serve the community as part of Concern's Home Based Management of malaria scheme.
HIV and AIDS
Following successful "training the trainers" sessions under the Child Survival Programme, a module called HIV-AIDS and Nutrition was adopted, and should serve as a valuable source for members of associations of people living with HIV&AIDS.
