Overview
Sierra Leone is in western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic, between Guinea and Liberia.
There were elections in Sierra Leone in 2002 after a 12-year civil war during which tens of thousands of people lost their lives and close to two million people were displaced, many of whom are still refugees in neighbouring countries.
At present the government is in the process of re-establishing its authority.
Concern has now been working in Sierra Leone for 10 years. Operations were initiated in 1996 when Concern was involved exclusively in emergency relief activities during the civil war.
This was in response to large numbers of internally displaced people, the arrival of Liberian refugees and returning Sierra Leone refugees from both Guinea and Liberia.
Activities included camp management, responding to and prevention of cholera, distributing food, and non food items, support to health clinics, rehabilitation of schools and the provision of farming inputs (seed and tools).
This took place over a seven year period in Freetown when the security situation permitted and in the provincial districts of Kailahun, Moyamba, Bombali and Kenema. Read more...
