Overview
Darfur
With no sign of a resolution of the situation in Darfur, Concern coordinates activities in several camps for internally displaced people. Concern provides water and sanitation, distributes food and household items and supports the Ministry of Health, providing medical and nutrition services. Concern also helps the displaced people and local communities to rebuild their livelihoods and helps to reduce the environmental impact of the camps.
Building and training
Concern is helping to develop the infrastructure in south Sudan, including schools, health centres and government offices. It is also training and mentoring Sudanese civil servants and staff from local NGOs.
Local partnerships
HIV and AIDS infection rates are considered to be low in Sudan in comparison to neighbouring countries, but there is limited awareness of HIV and AIDS issues. Concern is involved in a successful HIV and AIDS education pilot programme in Yirol Country in conjunction with local partner, MAAGY (Mobilization for AIDS Awareness in Greater Yirol). Concern has been working with a larger educators’ network, focusing on behavioural changes for high-risk groups, as well as influencing opinion leaders.
Water programmes
Concern’s Sudan water programmes develop and rehabilitate existing water sources, focusing on maintenance and repairs, as well as improved hygiene and sanitation practices. New water sources, benefiting 14,000 households, are being developed through borehole drilling with machines and hand-augured rigs in Aweil and Yirol, and the construction of water yards in Kordofan.
Livelihoods
Concern works to improve food and income security for rural communities through agricultural and livestock extension services, watershed management and agro-forestry.
