Overview

With its ancient culture and the Himalayas as a backdrop, the landlocked country has long been the destination of choice for travellers in search of adventure.

It is one of the world's poorest countries.

There has been much unrest in the country but now with King Gyanendra handing over power to the parliament there are positive signs of peace breaking out in the country.

It is in the process of changing from a Hindu kingdom to a secular state.

Concern's work in Nepal

Concern has been working in Nepal since 2005. It was agreed that the aid agency would work through local NGOs to tackle the most pressing impacts of the conflict.

During 2006 it is planned that the Concern programme will reach 10,500 vulnerable households in the Karnali and Bheri zones.

These two areas have been badly affected by the conflict.

They are also two of the poorest areas in the country.

The projects will include supplying clean drinking water and sanitation, and improving food security.
