Looking forward to the midterm

As the midterm approaches and Round Five draws to a close, the competition is really hotting up, and teams in Round Six will be competing for a place in the Quarter Finals.

Well done to you all for the hard work you have put into the debates. We have been hearing some very positive feedback from the adjudicators. They have been impressed with the skills teams have gained over the course of the debates so far. Some of the adjudicators have been back to schools they adjudicated during the league phase and are amazed by the evolution of teams from nervous first timers to confident debaters. Some mentioned that the quality of the refutation and rebuttal far outshines some of the TDs in the Dáil as well. They all continue to be amazed by the research and preparation that goes into a debate.

The importance of time
However, a number of adjudicators have asked us to mention that time is especially important at this stage of the competition. Debates can be won or lost on time penalties (trust us it has happened before). When you hear that second bell at four minutes and 15 seconds, wind it up! You can say:

“I am sorry I have run out of time, I urge you to propose/oppose the motion.”

Don’t worry, the adjudicators will understand.

The motion and pairings for Round Six can be found here.

We hope you all enjoy your midterm break!
