Concern Debates National Final 2008

Approaching the RDS last night the rumble of 650 supporters of Athlone Community College and CBS Thurles stomping their feet was deafening. As the teams approached the auditorium they were treated like superstars by their adoring fans in the audience.

Last night’s event was the culmination of eight months and eight rounds of gruelling debates. Throughout the competition teams have argued motions on the viability of development aid, terrorism and boycotting the Beijing Olympics.

This year’s National Final motion “To end hunger, the world must embrace biotechnology”, proposed by Athlone Community College and opposed by CBS Thurles.

The proposing team, Athlone Community College, comprised of Bronwyn Reid-McDermott, Ciarán O’Connor, Caoimhe McManus and Thomas Keogh. Athlone Community College supporters are no strangers to the Debates final, as last year’s team are National Champions and travelled to Haiti in the summer of 2007 as part of their prize.

The opposition, CBS Thurles, was made up of Pierce Maguire, Aidan Skehan, Daniel Ryan and John Cleary.

The debate was opened to screams of “We love you Pat” by veteran broadcaster Pat Kenny as he took to the podium.  He told the students about his experience of making a film with Concern to mark their 20th anniversary (Concern is 40 this year) and chairing the first ever Concern debate. Pat handed the proceedings over to his colleague Fergal Keane, who was in charge of keeping order for the night.

The debate kicked off with Bronwyn Reid-McDermott proposing the motion. Bronwyn introduced her colour coded team and their arguments. Blue for marine technology, green for agricultural technology, red for medical technology and white for industrial technology. They argued that bio-fuels allow poor land to be cultivated for effective use and new fuel avenues to be opened up. Referring to the 2.6 billion people living without access to clean water, they argued that biotechnology can help provide clean drinking water to these billions helping end hunger.

Captain of the opposition, Pierce Maguire opened up his team’s argument. Defining the motion not purely in opposition to biotechnology but supporting other methods such as local food production and changing western consumer habits.  ch they say would do more to end hunger than simply relying on bio technology.

They had a well researched argument and used the example of a Zambian village they visited last year to support their case. They also argued that bio-fuels were being used to “steal from the mouths of the poor and put into the starving SUVs in the world.”

Both teams made powerful arguments to support their position during the course of the debate. The captain of the opposing team Pierce Maguire sent shivers down the spine of the audience when he said “bio-fuel does not grow food but grows freedom from guilt” in his summation speech.

While the adjudicators were considering the debate the motion was opened to the floor. Audience members grilled both teams on their arguments, which highlighted the teams’ engagement with the topic.

In recognition of other schools who had done so much to make the debates a success, prizes were presented by Tom Arnold for best new school, best researchers and best team mentor.

Finally, after what seemed like an age, Chief Adjudicator Patricia Boyd took to the stage to announce the winners. She praised both schools for their scintillating arguments saying it had been a very difficult choice for them.

After a pregnant silence she announced that the motion had been carried. For the first time in Concern Debates history a school had retained the title. Supporters of Athlone Community College went wild, jumping on their seats, waving flags, chanting “ACC, ACC!”

Both teams richly deserved the praise they received. It’s a huge achievement to make it to the national final. The captain of CBS Thurles spoke of how humbled they felt at making it this far and congratulated the winning team on their achievement. The captain of Athlone Community College thanked their supporters, teachers and finally Concern for giving them the opportunity to take part in the debates.

The winning team was presented with the Concern Debates trophy and will be travelling to Concern projects in Africa over the summer as part of their prize.

Last nights debate was truly a spectacular debate. As a supporter from Thurles CBS, I was extremely disappointed in the result, yet shocked that we lost. I am sure that the adjudication was fair and examined to the last, but I thought that we nailed it and should of won! It was a close result, someone had to win and someone had to lose, it's just the way it goes! It was really amazing to have our school team, Pierce, Aidan, Daniel and John to be even in the Final as our school has never before been in a debate final. They were absolutely fantastic last night and should have won the debate, but sadly didn't. Well done everyone for a truly enjoyable evening and congrats to Athlone for wining the final!!

Athlone were awesome. Sooo funny and clevr. They gave us a smashin dbate- they have set an unreal standard but others will come up to it in time.

I feel the result was the wrong one! as a neutral i watched closely as both teams provided a fantastic evenings entertainment, but couldn't stop myself from feeling very dissapointed at the result. Don't get me wrong, Athlone were a fantastic team, i just feel that they were sadly lacking in content. Since when have the concern debates prioritised one-liner jokes ahead of real substance!? i have no doubt that the adjudicators were fair and unbiased but i think that the marking scheme must be examined more closely so that research, presentation and content atre rewarded above anything else! With that said i would like to compliment both teams on a great debate and look forward to next years final already!

Attended the final. The standard was very high but Athlone were by far the best team I have ever heard and I am 20 years adjudicating in various competitions. Their content was wide ranging with very good rebuttals and humour. Thurles were good but need to win audience over more. They were inclined to read speeches. Athlone's captain was the best I have ever heard. Well done to all.Adjudicators reached the correct decision and teams will have to come up to the standard set by Athlone.

Concern debate final was very good with Athlone particularly good on rebuttals. They covered the topic better and had hardest side I feel. They had very strong speakers but Thurles did themselves justice too as did teams in Semi-final. Its a great competition. Well done to Concern for organising it. I think there should be a best speaker from each round.

the debate in itself was a class act. Thurles were fantastic, very strong speakers and made thought provoking points that worked sublimly. The captain impressed me the most with his profound sense of understanding. Athlone although were just dynamic, their captain has set the way summations are meant to be written and performed and athlones rebuttals were superb. They supplied us with a myriad of grade A points that leaked maturity, class and an overall sense of common sense and logic. If anyhing thurles lacked enough humour compared to athlone, which is where i think athlone speared ahead. They invited the audience of a journey with them that only enhanced their arguments. Although it was closer than the pages of a book, Athlone truly deserved to win, and I think all knowledgeable persons will agree. Well done athlone, the standard has been set very high for next year.

I was at the final and was a little disappointed with Thurles. Lacked in teamwork and kept repeating same arguement over and over. They also didnt rebut very much and this is a debating not Public Speaking competition. Athlone were very good and broke down Biotechnology into four parts with great sources and humour and clever teamwork. They had a good style and are very good at rebuttals. Well done to both teams however as I know its not easy in front of such a huge crowd. I hope a Navan team can win it next year.

Hi there. As a lecturer in the food science field and an experienced debater in my day the national final was of much interest to me! However on attending the final i was utterly disappointed at the standard of adjudication. Altough Athlone may have entertained the audience with their one liners and admittingly funny jokes I dont quite remember a section in the marking scheme for humour if I remember correctly my former debating/adjudicating days! Coming away from the debate I asked myself what did I learn from the proposition throughout the night in relation to why we MUST embrace BT in ending hunger? Nothing came to mind so I gave it 24 hours and asked myself the same question. The same reaction! The truth of the matter is that Athlone had little or no content and in my opinion fooled the adjudicators. Thurles on the other hand had content, credibility and sincerity. They had clearly done much more research than Athlone and I honestly felt so sad for them when athlone were announced the winners. Thurles provided us with alternatives to BT which proved their argument and won the debate in my opinion. I would like to congratulate both teams on reaching the final and they both deserved their place on this national stage... however can I say to thurles - had I been adjudicating the result would have been very different....

I was at the final and thought that Athlone were streets ahead of Thurles. I am shocked and disappointed at how Thurles seem to be such poor losers. There is a section for humour in the adjudicating sheets as there is for teamwork and rebuttals. Athlone had the greater content.Since when does repeating the same point add up to content Thurles? It is obvious that Prof Richardson does not exist and that many comments are being written by the same person. Get over it Thurles- you are so transparent.Alternatives- those things which have failed already- and a Professor against Biotechnology. What a slur on the adjudicators. There is nothing worse than an ungracious loser- you are fooling no one Thurles! My friends and I travelled from Laois and we all agreed Athlone were so much better than Thurles . However Thurles there is always next year!!

Hi was at the debate and I have been reading the blogs. Whoever that Thurles supporter is sending in silly blogs with the same characteristics -move on. Ye lost to a better team .You are doing no favours for your team by being so ungracious.Athlone were superb- presentation-content - refutals/rebuttals. Ye were good too but theres always next year -yea? Athlone dont rise to the bait- debate is over and Well done. Laurel Hill will have super team next year and we hope to get cup back. Concern ye are doing super job.

Thurles - how pathetic! Surely you have learned not to be such bad sports. How truly disappointing- Pretending to be someone else-childish. Take a leaf from previous teams losses (We lost last year) and show some dignity. Well done Athlone

Hi Pierce here from Thurles CBS. Let me make it very clear that we have nothing to do with these comments. I do not know whether or not this professor exists and it is immaterial. The debate was very close and we lost by a two three majority. We are very disappointed but we accept the result and have nothing to do with these comments. We congratulate Athlone on an excellent debate and a well earned victory, but if people want to discuss the result then this is the place to do so and it is there right to express their opinion. I am very disappointed that people's opinions have been attacked and I would ask that others be respected on this forum in the future. Pierce Maguire and Thurles CBS Team.

I would like to add that the following page has information on how we feel about our result and the fantastic year we have had thanks to concern. I would ask anyone who wishes to criticise us to view this before hurting and insulting us with false and derogatory comments. http://www.spunout.ie/action/be-inspired/can-you-relate-to-debate-/59-3097

Hello debates enthusiasts. Thanks for all your comments about this year’s debates final. I think at this stage everyone has had the chance to offer their congratulations and air their grievances. So, I’m going to close this thread as it is. Although the debates are over, this blog will continue and will cover all the other great work Concern does with schools and students around the country. See ya, Níall
