When Pakistan sustained a devastating earthquake in October 2005, women in the village of Shohal Mazullah knew little of what awaited them.
Before this, women occupied traditional roles which denied them nearly all contact with those outside their immediate family. Once this disaster occurred, however, the men and recently widowed mothers of the village slowly came to a realisation. They understood that the survival of their families depended on expanding women’s roles in the community.
Now, women in Shohal Mazullah support their families by working in the fields and teaching. Many are also learning trades such as embroidery and tailoring. Despite the conditions in village, which is still undergoing reconstruction, these women are now thriving. They have overcome their old positions in society and have been given a glimpse of a different life.
