So the debates year has kicked off again and students around the country have already been honing their skills for the year ahead. We ran three “Meet the Finalists” debates workshops in Carlow, Galway and Cork. Our celebrity debaters (last year’s finalists) came along to share their secrets of how to get to the Concern Debates final.

The day began with skills development. We focused on research, communication and refutation and rebuttal skills. In the afternoon, these skills were tested in the speed debates where teams were given just seven minutes to prepare their debates. Last year’s finalists were extremely impressed by the quality of the debates with so little preparation…looks like it will be a very competitive year ahead!

Thanks to our finalists Caoimhe Kenny, Francis Dowling, Bronwyn Reid-McDermott, Ciarán O’Connor, Pierce Maguire, Daniel Ryan and Aidan Skehan for helping us out on the days. You can see them as they lined up before last year’s final here.

If you’d like to run a debates workshop in your school, you can contact Gráinne at debates@concern.net or on 087 3299865.
