To mark World Day Against Child Labour on 12 June, Concern asked primary school children all over Ireland to fly a kite and help over 218 million child labourers go to school rather than work.
In Dublin, around 100 children from two schools – Griffeen Educate Together in Lucan and St Paul’s Greenhills – and many other supporters took part in a kite flying parade on Grafton Street. Giant puppets, drummers and stilt walkers accompanied the enthusiastic children as they marched up and down Grafton Street chanting at the top of their voices, “We don’t want to work no more, on the farm or factory floor. We just want to fly our kites and stand up for children’s rights!”
With their brightly coloured kites flying high, young people across Ireland made it clear that child labour should be eliminated.
Kite-flying activists will be glad to learn that the Stop Child Labour campaign will be flying more kites in August over the Festival of World Cultures and the Electric Picnic.
