Primary Schooling

I met Irondina in Nahene Primary School on the outskirts of Nampula City. Nahene school.

Irondina says: “This is my first year in school. I have an older brother and sister who also come to school here. I really like school and I’m learning how to read and write. I also help the teacher to do sums on the blackboard. The best thing about school is that my friends are also here. Sonia and Daria* are my best friends and they live in the same village as me. We all walk to school together everyday. Our village is about 20 minutes walk from here.”

Nahene was selected for school construction and Concern have built a brand new school beside the site of the old school which still stands and serves as the classroom for the younger students. Before Concern arrived the straw roof of the main building leaked during the rainy season meaning children had to stay at home during heavy rains.

As well as building the new school building Concern have installed a tin roof on the other school building so as it is protected from the rain. Concern have provided students with copybooks and stationary and have provided all classrooms with blackboards. As with many schools in Mozambique, the teachers in Nahene Primary School are not qualified. Concern have increased the skills of the schools teachers through training so as to increase the standards of education.

I spoke to members of the Nahene School Council who told me that up until a few years ago there was no school here and their children had to walk a long distance to attend school in another community. However during the rains they could not get to school due to swollen rivers. However since then the situation has improved significantly, “We feel proud that we have such a beautiful school in our community” they told me.
