Clean Water in Saut d’Eau, Haiti

Because of the poor quality of drinking water, many people in Saut d’Eau, a country town about three hours drive north-east of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, were suffering from stomach ailments.

This was not only expensive on families in terms of medical bills, but also resulted in the taking off of days from work and/or school.

Why Concern became involved:
Access to health services was poor and the contaminated water was a major cause of illness amongst the community.

Concern has been involved in a Community Health Project in the Saut d'Eau area since May 2000.

One important aspect of this project concerned the improvement of the community's access to potable water.

What Concern has done:
During a series of visits, Concern staff met with community leaders, representatives from local government, women's groups, as well as staff and patients attending the local health centre.

To date, the most important results of this project have been the access to clean water for the entire Saut d'Eau commune, and the construction of four spring protection boxes in rural areas, both of which have made a significant effect on the overall health and prosperity of the community
