60 year old Shamlal Satnami lives in Badabazar, Khetrajpur, Sambalpur, India.
He is the sole provider for his family of eight through his occupation as a daily wage worker.
In his own words
“I am a daily wage worker who has to work hard to meet the needs of my family.
I have six sons but none of them bothered to repair our damaged house.
If they don’t support me, what is the point of having these six sons and feeding them until I die? And why would any woman like to marry a person who does not earn a single rupee?
“My family was provided with food for five days in a camp before we returned to our damaged house.
But it rained continuously, which added to my problems as I could not go to work. I ended up taking shelter in my sister’s place.
Being given polythene sheets by Concern means I can cover the roof of my house and stay there instead of taking shelter in a relative’s home.
Self help is more dignified than being dependent – this polythene sheet helps me regain confidence and dignity.”
