How trusts and foundations can make a difference
Your support could make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries to cope in the aftermath of a disaster or to build a better future for themselves and their families. Here are some examples of how grants can be used.
Emergencies: £250 could provide shelter and basic essentials to five families. (Sudan)
Sanitation: £500 could provide the materials to build one school latrine. The minimum number of students in a Haitian school is 250 (Haiti)
Nutrition: £1,000 could buy half a tonne of plumpynut (the ready to use supplementary food) which will treat 30 children with malnutrition. (Ethiopia)
HIV / AIDS: £1,500 can pay the wages of a nurse with knowledge of HIV/AIDS for one year. (Uganda)
Primary Health Care: £3,250 could train 50 Traditional Birth Attendants. (Sierra Leone)
Water: £4,480 could install seven hand pumps and reduce incidents of waterborne diseases. (Sudan)
Income Generation and Microfinance: £10,000 could provide small loans to 200 - 300 people and provide them with basic training on how to run a business. (Haiti)
Education: £10,165 could provide teacher refresher training to 44 teachers over two years. (Burundi)
Agricultural Production: £15,000 could help rehabilitate a traditional ‘karez' irrigation system which would help one village, of about 110 families, population about 770 people. (Pakistan)
£25,000 is a significant sum which can make an enormous difference to whole communities. For example £25,000 could construct a health centre in a rural area of Haiti. £25,000 could also help set up and rehabilitate drinking water supply schemes from natural springs on gravity flow, for a whole Union Council comprising 10 villages with a total population of about 10,000 people. (Pakistan)
