Involve your school
There are many ways your school can become involved with Concern.
Whether you are a student, a primary school teacher or a secondary school teacher there is something to suit all your needs. Many of these activities would also be suitable for youth or community groups.
The Concern FAST
The FAST is Concern’s most successful community fundraising campaign. Students are sponsored to FAST for 24 hours. Last year, over 250 schools all over Ireland came together to raise over €700,000 for Concern. In 2007, you can help do even better! Students are sponsored to FAST for 24 hours. This year the Concern FAST is on Thursday the 29 November so don’t delay and register to take part right now.
Other fundraising events
Remember if fasting isn't for you that's okay. There are all sorts of different things you can do, from a head shave to a bungee jump. Choose a suggested activity or make up your own idea and have fun raising funds for Concern.
If you would like to discuss fundraising in secondary schools, please contact Rory Sturdy on (087) 27 99 555 or (01) 417 8020 or email rory.sturdy@concern.net
The Concern Debates
Started in 1984, the Concern Debates is Ireland’s longest running secondary school debates competition. Each year approximately 160 secondary schools from around the country participate in the debates. Click here for more information.
Campaigns
Concern is involved in a number of campaigns which raise awareness and encourage people to take action on issues of local and global importance. There is a range of different ways to involve your school, youth group or local community. Some of our current campaigns include:
School speakers
You can request a school speaker to visit your school and talk with students about Concern's important work overseas and how students can get involved. (This is currently only available in the Republic of Ireland.) Click here to request a speaker.
Resources
For students, Concern will send you resources and information to help with school projects on the developing world, charities or any of the issues that Concern is involved with. Just email debates@concern.net. You can also check out the website that Concern has created with some other organisations at www.developmenteducation.ie where you will find lots more information.
For teachers, we want children and young people to learn about, debate and campaign on some of the wide range of world issues that Concern works on. There are a great deal of resources designed to fit in with the primary and secondary curricula. In particular, our resources may be of interest to CSPE, Geography, Business Studies, and English teachers. They will also be useful for youth and community groups.
Other events
Throughout the year Concern organises different school events such as the Global Challenge Quiz and Youth Forums on child labour. Check back here regularly for more information, or contact us at debates@concern.net or on 01 417 7733.
