Farming and food in Zimbabwe

Concern launched a food and farming project in Zimbabwe in July 2006. Since then, 124,000 people in three of the regions who are hardest hit by food shortages have benefitted from it.

How do you improve access to food?

We worked with local communities to improve people’s knowledge of farming techniques. We helped improve the way land was used and managed and we encouraged better conservation. Through the planting of gardens and fruit trees, communities’ diets became more diverse and improved greatly.

Was it a success?

The people involved in this nutrition garden project produced 38% more vegetables than some of their neighbours, who were not involved. In Gokwe South, farmers produced an even higher yield of over 70%.

People taking part in Concern’s projects produced more crops, and were able to sell their surpluses.

More vegetables, more cash

Increased vegetable production meant that many farmers had the opportunity to sell and make money. Overall, the lives of 124,000 people have been improved by these projects.
