With Southeast Asia’s highest malnutrition rates, Timor Leste's government is under pressure to deliver tangible benefits to the poor and ensure long-term stability.

Concern Worldwide’s work focused on livelihoods and health in the past year, and we will be contributing to a pilot malnutrition project with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF. This is due to start in early 2008.

Earning a secure living

5,344 people have directly benefited from our livelihoods programme and now have a more secure living. The programme gave people access to seeds and tools, built new irrigation and nursery systems and provided poultry and agricultural training.

Learning about sustainability

We arranged for farmer leaders, local partners and government staff to visit other projects in neighbouring districts to learn about sustainable farming techniques. They are now applying these techniques in their own communities.

To help improve health and nutrition, we ran cooking demonstrations and training in water purification methods for 1,970 women and girls and health education for 600 women.

More achievements in Timor Leste:

  • 28,713 people have directly benefited from flood mitigation support
  • Concern provided emergency nutrition for 2,741 infants 1,358 pregnant and breast-feeding women
  • We trained mothers on better hygiene and feeding practices
  • Concern helped community outreach workers raise awareness of these issues through home visits
