Innovations for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health

18 November 2016

Begun as an initiative of Concern Worldwide in 2009 and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Innovations for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) programme develops and tests creative solutions for improving the health and survival of mothers, babies, and children.

Overview

Every year, about 300,000 women die from causes related tom pregnancy and nearly six million children die before their fifth birthday. Most of these deaths occur in developing countries - and most are preventable.

The Innovations programme actively engages communities in the design process to ensure its programmes meet and respond to their specific needs. The project briefs give an overview of the results from the second phase of the programme.

Community Health Nurses on the Go

This project equips Community Health Nurses with a smartphone app designed with and for frontline health workers who visit rural pregnant mothers and newborns. The app offers immediate diagnostic support, accrediated e-learning courses, tools for planning targets such as the number of children to immunize, and WhatsApp groups to connect nurses to peers and supervisors.

Maker Movement for MNCH

The purpose of the project is to design low-cost, high quality medical devices for Kenya's maternity wards where functioning equipment is scare. In this unique partnership, engineering staff and students from the University of Nairobi and nurses from Kenyatta National Hospital co-design the devices.

Community Benefits Health

This project seeks to improve health behaviours in remote communties with high material and newborn death rates through robust messaging for women and those who influence their decisions, such as husbands and elders, and rewards communities that change with a water pump or emergency vehicle.

Essential Newborn Care Corps

The project aims to train and rebrand traditional birth attendants, who used to assist hoe deliveries, to counsel pregnant and new mothers at home and refer them to health centers for care, deliveries and family planning.
