Job purpose: 

To work closely with the Head of Communications (UK) to increase Concern’s profile in the UK. This is a key role in developing Concern UK’s communications capacity, and meeting its communications, fundraising and advocacy objectives.  It is central to the continued growth of the UK offices and to Concern’s engagement with all its audiences.  The post holder will play a central role in the delivery of Concern Worldwide (UK)’s communication strategy and operational plans and will play an integral part in the promotion of Concern’s work to the media and other external audiences.

Main duties & responsibilities: 

Public Affairs/Advocacy

  • Provide high quality written and visual information/materials to support the organisation’s objectives such as fact sheets, case studies, media packs, media releases, reports 
  • Write, edit and proofread communications and other department materials, including digital, to ensure Concern brand consistency and compliance
  • Provide communications support to fundraising teams to include advising on appeal themes, working with creative agencies to develop briefs and providing content
  • Project manage specific organisational projects or streams of work. e.g. integrated communications/fundraising/advocacy campaigns such as AidMatch
  • Devise and deliver multi-channel targeted communications campaigns addressing Concern’s key priorities
  • Work with the Policy & Campaigns team to develop Concern’s position and messaging on key strategic issues, contributing to the development of multi-media advocacy and communications strategies of same

 

Corporate Communications

  • Maintain an awareness of the wider political and media context in which Concern operates to offer proactive communications advice and guidance to colleagues, working with colleagues to define messages, tools and strategies for communicating on same
  • Lead for UK on specified streams of joint global communications work
  • Work with Digital Communications Manager/ web team to ensure Concern’s UK website content is relevant to the UK audience and up-to-date
  • Actively participate in social networking opportunities - Twitter, Facebook, blogging etc.
  • Work with Digital Content Editor to develop on and off-line  content plans, taking responsibility for specific projects

 

Media and PR

  • Proactively develop and maintain relationships with key broadcast, print and new media
  • Proactively research and place stories with media – writing press releases, Op Eds, Letters to Editors as necessary
  • Lead on response to media enquiries in a timely and appropriate way
  • Provide media briefings, advice and guidance to Executive Director (and other staff as necessary)
  • Manage relationships with external providers of media database and monitoring service
  • Lead on the analysis and evaluation of media coverage
  • Represent Concern with external bodies and networks during times of joint action (e.g. DEC) to ensure Concern makes a significant contribution to joint objectives.
  • Act as main media liaison point with DEC
  • Commission journalists/photographers/videographers to visit fields
  • Lead on the organisation of and accompany media/av visits to field, gathering stories,  case studies and audio visual material as appropriate
  • Assist with the organisation of external events  (photo exhibitions, launch events, parliamentary receptions, briefings, fundraising events) and develop speaker briefs as necessary

 

Management

  • Proactively assist in the delivery of the communications strategy and operational plans
  • Share deputising Head of Communications when necessary, taking responsibility for the communications function in their absence, including staff management

  • The post holder will also be expected to carry out any other reasonable duties as are commensurate with the grade of this post.

Person specification

Person specification (essential): 
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years work experience in a communications role
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the  media with a track record of effective targeting and achievement
  • Experience of campaigning activity and campaigns media
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability  to adapt and appeal to various audiences
  • Proven ability and confidence to communicate, influence and negotiate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Confident self-starter, enthusiastic, highly motivated, creative, with excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to lead team initiatives with other staff, but also comfortable working on own
  • General IT skills, with design skills an advantage
  • Readiness to travel if required

  • Experience of working in international development
  • Journalistic skills
  • Interest in and understanding of the key issues in development, and of the target groups with whom Concern Worldwide engages
  • Budget management
