Job specification

Job purpose: 

To maximise income and support for Concern Worldwide (UK) from trusts and foundations in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) and Europe, by establishing and maintaining long-lasting and mutually beneficial relationships with them, based on a clear understanding of their requirements as funders and by delivering excellent customer service.

Main duties & responsibilities: 

Lead the development of Concern UK’s trusts fundraising strategy, to achieve sustainable income growth:

  • Develop the trusts fundraising strategic plan, testing new approaches as needed and delivering income targets on an annual and five year basis.
  • Develop, report and monitor key performance indicators, to evaluate performance and identify opportunities to improve effectiveness.
  • Ensure continuing improvements to the service and feedback provided to trusts supporters
  • Contribute to the development of the overall fundraising strategic plan, working with the Director of Fundraising and other fundraising managers.


Line management

  • Manage and develop the Trusts and Foundations Officer, setting and monitoring individual annual objectives
  • Provide management support, training and development support, including regular 121s and annual appraisals.
  • Supervise interns as required


Implementation and delivery:

  • Develop, implement and monitor annual operational plans and budgets
  • Plan, design and submit compelling applications to major trusts and foundations, based on a clear understanding of Concern’s programmes and donor requirements.
  • Plan, design and submit progress reports and detailed financial reports to trusts and foundations.
  • Directly manage and grow Concern UK’s relationships with major trusts (worth £25,000 and more) and, where appropriate, accompany donors to visit overseas projects
  • Ensure adequate and up to date records are kept on both donors and the specific programmes which are funded.
  • Undertake research and networking to ensure new prospects are identified and developed.
  • Liaise with the overseas department and where applicable, and the Grant Coordination Unit to ascertain project funding requirements which are of interest to the Trust and Foundation sector and to service new and existing grants
  • Liaise with colleagues from the US and ROI offices who mainly fundraise from Foundations and Corporates, whilst working closely with other fundraising departments
  • Develop a strong understanding of Concern’s overseas work to properly engage with donors and stakeholders in the UK and Europe.


Communications and Representation:

  • Present Concern’s activities to trusts and foundations and represent Concern UK at external meetings.
  • Build relationships with Trustees and key Concern Worldwide personnel, so as to be an effective link between them and key partnerships and donors.


Ensure regulatory and legal compliance and best practice

  • Ensure Concern UK’s trusts fundraising complies with the requirements of the Fundraising Regulator Code of Practice, ICO guidance and all other legal requirements, including those for data protection and the GDPR.

Person specification

Person specification (essential): 
  • 3 years experience in Trusts and Foundation fundraising, preferably in the international development sector
  • Degree level education
  • Proven track record in successful Trust and Foundation fundraising of at least £500,000 pa
  • Proven ability to manage and develop line reports
  • Ambitious, results driven, highly organised, able to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Proven ability in producing effective, cohesive, motivating and inspiring proposals and funding reports
  • Highly numerate and literate, with extensive experience of reviewing budget and financial reports and presenting these to funders  
  • Ability and confidence to represent the organisation to potential and existing funders
  • Experience of making outstanding presentations, networking, negotiation and influencing others
  • Proven interest in and knowledge of international development
Person specification (desirable): 
  • Experience of working overseas in the international development sector
  • Degree level qualification in international development
  • Experience of working in an INGO and/or a development charity within a trusts and foundations fundraising setting
