Drought in Ethiopia

Due to severe drought in 2017, over eight million people in Ethiopia do not have enough food and over 350,000 children under five are at risk of severe malnutrition.

Meet Kali and Maria

Kali is the 18-month-old daughter of Maria from the Somali region of Ethiopia, a region suffering the most extreme impacts of drought. At just 18 months, Kali was in the grip of severe malnutrition and fighting for her life.

She was brought to a Concern-supported health centre by her mother Maria when she weighed just 5 kgs (11 lbs), little more than a new-born baby and her upper arm measured no bigger than the size of a €2 coin. Thankfully, here Kali was provided with the emergency therapeutic food she needed to make a full recovery.
