Fighting hunger: EU presidency
Concern Worldwide has been involved in several events this year which are aimed at using the Irish presidency of the EU to fight hunger and extreme poverty.
Ireland’s turn to hold the EU presidency runs from January to June 2013. It’s a vital opportunity to talk to world leaders about the issues affecting people living in poverty, including hunger, inequality, and climate change.
In March this year, we joined a group of seven European NGOs for a roundtable called “Scaling up EU Impact on Community Resilience and Nutrition.” The event, hosted by Alliance2015, was held to discuss how vulnerable communities can tackle undernutrition with EU member states.
Nutrition and climate justice
We’ve also been working for many years to deliver programmes which tackle undernutrition and help local communities to withstand climate-related shocks, such as drought and flooding.
So, in April we attended the International Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Climate Justice. This aimed to explore how we can better prioritise the experience of the world’s poorest people when supporting local communities. Speaking at the event, an Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said:
We face the problem of hunger anyway. But climate change accentuates it. And, although climate change threatens all countries, it is the world’s poorest and most vulnerable that suffer most and can cope least. And they are the people who have contributed least to its cause.
Upcoming EU events
The next date in our diary for the presidency is 28 May when the EU Foreign Affairs Council will meet to agree on:
- A new food and nutrition security package
- Their position on the UN’s Millennium Development Summit in September
- An action plan on resilience
