Tribute to Seamus Heaney

Yesterday, Ireland bid farewell to one of its greatest poets, Seamus Heaney. During his lifetime, he was unwavering in his support of Concern Worldwide. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to him for his work as Patron of Concern.

Legacy of words

As our patron, Seamus Heaney was generous in giving his time and energy to Concern. On many occasions, we were privileged to have him give us his words through donated pieces of work, forewords in publications and public addresses on behalf of Concern.

Supporting the cause

In his foreword for “Believing in Action – Concern, The first 30 years,” he paid tribute to our workers as those who have “chosen to live at that high level where they are bound to keep facing the challenge – clear, noble and exhausting.”

A voice for future generations

A quiet, modest man, Seamus Heaney’s humanitarian voice resonated across cultures and will "dig" into the consciousness of generations to come. It was an honour for Concern to have him as our patron and his words will no doubt continue to inspire us in our fight against poverty.
