Aid on the way to camps in Darfur
Urgently needed aid supplies are on the way to families living in camps in western Darfur.
A convoy of trucks carrying essential relief items to camps managed by Concern in western Darfur has left the Sudanese capital Khartoum. The trucks are carrying plastic sheeting, blankets, jerry cans, buckets and mosquito nets for families living in camps in Mornei and El Geneina. Supplies are being transported now, before the imminent rains make access impossible.
The rains have already started in parts of southern Darfur and torrential downpours will soon be sweeping across the whole of the region. Once the rains start, vehicle tracks disappear and swollen rivers become impossible to cross.
In the camps
With a continuous stream of new families arriving in the camps, the first priority is to ensure each household is registered, so that relief supplies can be distributed to everyone. Registration is currently underway and distribution of relief items will begin as soon as the trucks arrive. Concern’s immediate priority is to provide 182,000 people with shelter items and other basic essentials.
Darfur and Concern
Concern has been working in Darfur since 2002, and is addressing the basic survival needs of over 300,000 displaced people. This is the organisation's largest current humanitarian operation.
