Haiti: water distribution
Standing patiently in the queue at our water distribution today is Evans. A 24 year-old teacher whose house was destroyed during the earthquake, he tells me:
You are the first agency to come and help us here. There are more than 2,000 people in this camp and we need more help.
Evans invites me to visit his house; the remains of his house. Down a corridor off the main road is a pile of rubble.
This was my home. I was standing outside with my sister, when the ground started shaking. Before I knew it, the house was falling down and I started to panic as my brother and two friends were inside watching television. We were able to rescue my brother but my two friends did not make it.
Trying to survive
Evans becomes emotional as he relives the trauma of last week. He is one of hundreds of young men in Port-au-Prince now trying to survive, trying to help his family survive.
Down at another makeshift camp, where an estimated 7,000 people are living on top of one another, our bladder tank is ready to be filled with clean water. Concern has been working vigorously to get this up and running. This bladder will be able to serve the community here with clean water for the coming months.
To date, Concern has provided water and water purification tablets to more than 13,000 people. Distributions will continue tomorrow. Concern’s teams have been organising these distributions with the local community leaders to ensure a peaceful delivery. This is essential in Concern’s emergency interventions here in Haiti. So far it is working.
