India floods update
Thousands of people have been displaced by the floods in India. People have shown remarkable resilience so far to survive with whatever little they had. But external help is needed if they are to recover from this disaster.
Many villages will be under water until the breach on Kosi embankment is repaired. This work may start after October. Therefore a large number of people will have to stay in relief camps for a long period of time.
A large number of people have preferred to remain in their own villages to take care of their homes. Other people are moving to relief camps and other safer places. As a result, the camps are witnessing both inward and outward movement of people, making camp management extremely difficult.
Concern, in collaboration with its Alliance2015 partners, is providing emergency relief to 6,000 families. Representatives of Concern and its partner Welthungerhilfe have also been able to provide guidance to local partners in affected areas.
Reaching the most neglected
Concern is also continuing to work with two local partners, GPSVS and Nav Jagriti. While many have initiated relief programmes on more easily accessible localities, Concern partners are making all efforts to reach out to people who are marginalised and living in less accessible areas.
The weeks ahead
The water level in Kosi River has receded during the past five days. However, heavy rains usually continue until mid October, so further flooding cannot be ruled out.
